Győr-Gönyű National Civil Docks is located at the mouth of the Mosoni-Danube. It is at the 1784th riverkilometre, only 38.5 kilometres from the mid-point of the Danube-Rhine-Maine waterway system.

The docks operator, the Győr-Gönyű Docks Ltd. had been established in 1992 and has been operating as the Győr-Gönyű Docks Inc. Since 1993. It's aim is to bring about development regarding primarily port construction and related investments. 

With the help of the Ministry of Transport and Water's and the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development's PHARE program a major project was undertaken in 1997. 

In the first phase a RO-RO terminal was built, which now has 240 metres of vertical concrete walls. Therefore the Győr-Gönyű Docks could begin operation also as a frontier port.

Traffic (loading, unloading, transfer traffic, forwarding) at the docks has increased ten fold in the past five years and the rate of growth is expected to rise.

The aim of the government owned company is to develop the docks and it's vicinity into the region's most enhanced industrial park. However to achieve this goal, a direct railway link has to be constructed for which the plans are already in the making.

With the railway line completed a connection will finally be established with the RO-RO's water and road transport system as national road No. 1 runs nearby and the M1 motorway is only 10 kilometres away. 

Eventually the Győr-Gönyű Docks will act as a crossroads for transport which will enable the area to become a Combined Transport and Logistics Centre.
